Our Malawi Partnership

Impact

18 months of planning proceeded the public launch, and the investment is now beginning to pay dividends - developing impact and visibility.

Since July 2023 we’ve...

coffee heart
Increased coffee production from 300,000 Kgs to 500,000 Kgs.
female farmer
Supported 6 female farmers in growing, sustaining and selling their crops.
grain
Increased organic fertiliser use across local farmers.
grain
Brought cleaner water to 37,000 people through One Foundation’s ‘Beyond Boreholes’ programme.
plant
Supported 30 Co-op Union members with over 1000 macadamia seedlings.
nuts
Facilitated Highland Macadamia Co-op Union back into Fairtrade status.

These results demonstrate our dedication to co-operative working and builds momentum as we celebrate our second year.

The partnership has expanded co-operative collaboration to include:

  • NRECA International running a clean energy programme.
  • CIC Malawi building a new micro-insurance health product targeted at rural women. MAFECO, through the OMP, will be offering this to the co-op members that Central Co-op supports.

Fresh From Malawi
+4000 border

4000 extra macadamia seedlings planted by farmers from the Highland Macadamia Co-operative Union.

  • Macadamia agroforestry recovers the land from deforestation, regenerates the sustainability of the ecosystem and increases food security.
  • Macadamia nuts support food security across Malawi as they are a high source of protein for farmers and add diversity to their diet.

+4000 border

Over 800 co-operative smallholder farmers trained in the production and use of organic fertiliser across coffee, tea, nuts and rice production.

  • Organic fertilizers are rich in matter that enhances the biological activity of soils, thereby also improving and sustaining their biodiversity.
  • Organic fertiliser use is crucial in moving towards sustainable, climate smart agriculture.
+4000 border

A 20% increase in coffee trees planted by Mzuzu Coffee Planters Co-operative Union.

  • Increasing the yield and income of co-operative smallholder farmers across Mzuzu, the capital of Malawi’s Northern Region.
...and counting!
